Hike Riverfield
How can Riverfield's hiking trails help us connect with the community?
The Idea
The Prairie class studied how people build connections with one another. We found that people connect by playing games, finding common interests, being kind and helping each other. We decided that a good way to connect with the Riverfield community was to map our hiking trails to create a trailhead and write an interactive choose your own adventure story for people to read while they hike.
The Map
As we hiked we acted as cartographers and drew our trails. Everyone created their own map. After each time we hiked we met as a group and created a collaborative version of the trail map. Each time we went into the woods we added to our maps. Our final draft was created by comparing our map to the maps that already existed and making small changes. Once we had a finished map of the trails, we worked together to sketch important landmarks to add to it.
The Story
We decided that a great way to connect with the Riverfield community was to write a choose your own adventure story that you could follow along with as you hike. We created the characters for the story out of polymer clay. We then took pictures of the clay characters and our teachers helped us superimpose our characters onto black and white pictures that we took of the hiking trails.
The Website
To showcase our work this year, we thought a website would be the best way to put all of the pieces of our project in one place that was easy for families to access. We wanted the people that hike in the Riverfield trails to know important hiking safety information and information about wildlife that lives in our woods. We also wanted our hiking map and story to be easy to find and use while you are out in the trails.
